Well hello there! and happy to meet your acquaintance! My name is Jessey, I'm a Kenyan born, father of two, working as a small scale urban market gardener in the city of Toronto and on my third growing season with my farm suitably called Zawadi (in Swahili, it means gift).
Before all this, I worked in tech as a business developer and to be completely honest, it was fun, but I struggled to find meaning within it.
My journey into urban farming has really impacted who I am and so much more, galvanizing what I call my purpose in life. The relationships I’ve seen, the generosity I’ve experienced, the ‘growing farmers’ mentality that is clear in every farmer that I've met, and the freedom to share ideas and build others within this farming community, completely just blows my mind!
Now, I know you are wondering why I’m producing this video and why in the world do I want to have you in it? Good question!
The Act of Broad forking
To use the broadfork (or any fork for that matter) requires you, the farmer, to either get on the fork, one foot, then the other, balance on the fork and with both arms, support your balance. Then, if your balance is right, move left and right, do your dismount off the fork and peel back and soil, but not lift off but raise the soil.
Broadforking allows farmers to break into hard soil and to air into it. The air in the soil helps with better root establishment and also helps the bio elements in the soil to flourish.
I envision this as a good picture of our role as farmers in society and believe that with the social pressures and daily strife, local farmers are these broad forks that break into the tough soil, and with the food and produce we grow, we’re adding the ‘air’ back into our community.
With good nutrition, doesn't matter what pressures we have, we can grow on, build better and form much greater roots!
Q: “Ok, so why do you want to do this?”
Yes, I’m full of crazy ideas, that's for sure! but this is the least crazy one I can go with (ask any of my friends, they’ll tell you!)
I’m creating this video to feebly start to highlight the source of our food, to use this video as a conversation starter unveiling the people behind it, the process and the faces building and nurturing our soil.
Highlighting You and Your Farm
My ultimate aim is to highlight you to your community, for them to know you exist, that you are close, that for what you grow, you put so much love and effort into the land.
Q: “Ok fine, what will you do with the video?”
Another great question!
I will be editing together (in NO PARTICULAR ORDER) all of you who submit, a collage of the ‘dance’. The video will also highlight your farm name and/or your name (your logo is optional)
It’ll be uploaded to YouTube and you can share with whomever you’d like, you’ll have complete rights even add it to your website or social media or any medium you feel happy to use it in, if you are in it, you can share it where ever your heart leads.
Q: "I’ve submitted the video, then what?”
Once I have finished collecting and when the video is done, we shall share with you first the final render before we release it.
Please note, we will use only what you submit in the form, so double check your details! No one likes to have a typo!
